The most optimistic of Whitecaps fans may never accept defeat but the fact that this season is close to the point of no return is undeniable. However, ‘Caps management pushes onward and upward in hopes of a late season push or maybe preparing for a better sophomore season.

This morning, the club announced the signing of their second Designated Player (DP), Gambian born striker Mustapha Jarju. In MLS terms, designated players are players teams sign that can play for the team outside of the team’s overall salary cap hit. This allows teams to compete for all star players from around the world regardless of tight salary cap restrictions. The ‘Caps other DP is Eric Hassli.

Whitecaps FC President Bob Lenarduzzi tells WhitecapsFC.COM, “Mustapha is a proven goal scorer at the club level in Europe.” He went on to also say that, “He has the pace and ability to find the back of the net with regularity.” Here’s to hoping those abilities shine through immediately because in 20 MLS games this season, Whitecaps FC have scored a measly 19 goals, which is simply, not good enough.

The 6 foot, 160 pound striker most recently completed three seasons with Belgian club Royal Albert-Elisabeth Club (RAEC) de Mons.  Just this past season, his play was exceptional enough to propel RAEC into the upper tier league in Belgium, the Jupiler Pro League. The promotion for RAEC was powered by 25 goals and 13 assists from Jarju in all competition, for a total of 41 matches.

Jarju, who turns 25 this coming Monday, is also the Captain for the Gambian National Team, and has tallied four times in 25 senior appearances. He also captained his country’s teams at the U-17 and U-20 level tournaments.

Ahead of what will likely be his first appearance this Saturday against Real Salt Lake at Empire Field, Jarju tells WhitecapsFC.COM, “I am very happy to begin the next stage of my career with Vancouver Whitecaps FC and play in one of the rising leagues in the world in MLS.”

Welcome to Beautiful BC Mustapha!
